Preparing your home for FTTP services
Due to the unique nature of FTTP technology it is important that you and your builder understand how you wish to use this technology in your own home so wiring can be customised to your needs. Prior to construction please consult our FTTP checklist to ensure you have made all the necessary arrangements with your builder or electrician for FTTP services.
We have prepared a FTTP document for builders and electricians outlining how to correctly wire a home for FTTP services.
How FTTP technology works
Instead of using copper cables for the ‘last mile' of access, FTTP uses a fibre optic cable connected from the exchange to the premises' external wall. Using pulses of light – that literally travel at the speed of light through the fibre – speed and performance is largely unaffected by distance, meaning a home can be up to 30km away from an exchange and get virtually the same service as a home next door to the exchange.
TransACT has been rolling out FTTP technology to new Canberra suburbs including Bonner, Crace, Franklin and Forde since 2007, well ahead of the governments' commitment to implement the National Broadband Network in the next eight years. As broadband increasingly becomes such an influence in our everyday lives, TransACT continues to future-proof Canberra suburbs.
